Welcome to Saint Michael and All Angels’, the historic parish church of Headingley.

Saint Michael and All Angels' is an open and inclusive church in the Liberal-Catholic tradition of the Church of England. Here you will find a parish church which, in various forms, has stood at the heart of the community of Headingley since 1620. Here you will find wonderful Gothic architecture, beautiful stained-glass and wrought iron work, and a fine organ accompanying harmonious singing, all witnessing to the beauty and welcome of God, and the care and faithfulness of generations of Christians. Above all, it is here you will find a Christian community worshipping God, praying that we may grow in love and service, and in the beauty of holiness.

We invite all who enter to pause and make space for the God who made us and who meets us in Jesus Christ.

I am new! - Join us at one of our services and introduce yourself to our friendly clergy and congregation. You can also contact us to find out more about St Michael’s community, its groups and what you may expect from visiting us.

IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT THE CHURCH BELLS

Dear friends and neighbours of St. Michael and All Angels’ Church,

We are very pleased indeed to announce that St. Michael’s has recently installed a new electrically driven chime hammer system which will enable our church’s bells to ring out, even when we have no available bell ringers.

As well as ringing the bells, the new system will enable us to restore the chimes to the church clock.  We are going to re-introduce the sound of the bells at our Patronal Festival Services (St Michael’s Day) on Sunday 29th September 2024.

This extensive project has been made possible thanks to the generosity of members of our congregation, past and present, which makes it extra special!

The bells and the clock chimes have been mainly silent for a couple of years due to mechanical issues, so we are very glad indeed that the wonderful sound of the church bells of Headingley will be heard regularly again.

A short peal of bells will be rung prior to the start of our 10am Sunday morning service and before the start of our 6.30pm Evensong service, each week. There may also be occasions of national or exceptional events where a peal will be rung.

In addition, the clock will strike the hours and the half hour chime from 8.00am to 8.00pm. The new system allows the clock chimes to be silent after 8pm, in consideration for our neighbours.

The current planned exceptions to this pattern are for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve when the clock chimes will strike to mark midnight.

There may be traditional (manual) bell ringing from visiting groups during the year, as currently happens. We will also have bell ringing (manually or electronically) for special events (this will not take place after 8.00pm).  For example, the bells may be used to ring for weddings and funerals, and may play Christmas carols on the evening of the Headingley Christmas Lights celebration and also on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day.

We hope that all our neighbours and friends will enjoy the sound of the bells ringing out once again!

SUNDAY WORSHIP

We warmly welcome you to join us for our Parish Eucharist service and sung Evensong services at St. Michael’s.

Parish Eucharist - 10:00am

The Parish Eucharist is a family service with all members of your family invited. The services contains Holy Communion and for those who have not been confirmed, a blessing. The Eucharist takes the form of a shared meal of bread and wine, recalling the fact that, at the Last Supper, Jesus associated the breaking of bread and sharing of wine.

The service is accompanied by the choir and organ with hymns, readings and a sermon.

There is a Children’s Corner with space for quiet children’s activities during the service.

There are certain parts of the service where traditionally we all stand or sit. Feel free to remain seated if you need to, and don’t worry — there’s no right or wrong way to worship.

We share communion standing at the high altar. If you require a gluten free communion wafer, please do let the Welcomers know when you enter the church.

We have a Servery in church so please do join us for refreshments after all our worship services.

Evensong - 6:30pm

In the busyness of Headingley, come and enjoy a peaceful service of hymns, readings, psalms, talks and anthems for a lovely way to end a weekend, feeling refreshed for another week ahead.

In this evening service, we are comforted, challenged and encouraged to respond to God in an open way. We are also invited to hear and recite ancient words, spoken and sung by countless millions over many centuries, and to join our hearts with an endless chorus of praise that began long ago and will continue long after we are gone.
